Life is Not a Struggle!

    To understand others is to have knowledge;
    To understand oneself is to be illuminated.
    To conquer others needs strength;
    To conquer oneself is harder still.
    To be content with what one has is to be rich…

I cannot recall exactly where I read this quote, but I know this translation of the Tao Te Ching has stuck in my head ever since I read it. I like it because it says what many people believe. Specifically, that it is difficult to conquer oneself. Many people find that it is a struggle to “conquer” oneself, and many take pride in the struggle. I suppose that since so many people believe that life is supposed to be a struggle, that being content with what you have makes you rich. Apparently there is a choice – either struggle or be content with what you have.

But why does it have to be a struggle? Why do we have to be content with what we have? That really doesn’t make any sense if you think about it. Read the rest of this entry »
